Do you have a farming story that you would like to share?
It could be early memories of life on a farm, farming anecdotes from now or bygone times, a memorable visit to a farm or anything else related to farming. (more…)

Back in early September 2005 I decided to use up some of the courgette and green tomatoes which kept growing in my veg garden by making courgette and green tomato chutney. I had never made chutney before but I thought I would give it a go. I am pleased to say that this chutney is delicious. It is great in a cheese sandwich, to accompany a salad, added to a curry/casserole or smeared over chicken breast which is wrapped in foil and cooked in the oven. I highly recommend making it so if I have tempted you then here is the recipe.

As I am relatively new to farming (having only married a farmer 3 and a half years ago) I have had to get used to the farming phrases that are used in association with the daily or seasonal activities on the farming.
Here are some of the farming terms that I have had to learn and understand.
- Feeding up - to feed the cattle.
- In bulling - the cow has been served by the bull.
- Leading bales - bringing the bales from the field into the yard.
- Out to grass - cattle have been taken to the grass fields for the Summer months.
- Grading potatoes - checking the potatoes to remove rotten, mis-shapen, over-sized, undersized potatoes as well as mud, weeds and stones.
- Leading corn - bringing the grain from the fields after it has been combined.
You might know some more. I would be interested to hear what they are so just leave a comment. If you want to make it really hard for me then just leave the phrase and I’ll see if I can guess what it means!

On Wednesday a deer was spotted down the lane by my godsons and myself. I don’t know who was more thrilled - I think possibly me! This is only the second time I have ever seen a roe deer and it is the first time I have just stumbled upon a deer whilst walking down the lane.
The deer was a young roe deer who was walking through the field. Although we were some distance away we had a clear view of the deer and it had a clear view of us. Every once in a while the deer would stop and look in our direction. The deer had a beautiful red coat which is it’s Summer coat. Click on this link for more information about the
roe deer.
I did not have my camera so I couldn’t take a photograph of this beautiful creature but check out the lovely deer photograph sent in by Sally from Sunk Island on the photograph competitions page.

The barley has been successfully harvested this year and the grain is safely stored in the new grain store.

Our Winter barley had a good harvest but the Spring barley was more difficult this year.

When I switched on my computer this morning I was greeted with a lovely surprise. Claire had awarded me with the Nice Matters Award. I don’t know what I have done to deserve this award but I am thrilled to receive it and will proudly display the award in my sidebar. It is such an honour when someone from the blogging world thinks about you and takes the time to award you. Claire is one of my new blogging friends who takes beautiful photographs of the lovely flowers in her garden - go visit her now and checkout clairesgarden for yourself. Thanks Claire for thinking of me.
I will now nominate 8 other blogging friends (although I have to say that it is hard to choose only 8 as there are so many nice supportive blogging friends out there); (more…)
