Cattle Move Indoors

Last years calves move into the fold yard.Last years calves move into the fold yard.Last years calves move into the fold yard.

Earlier in September, the calves that were born last year, moved back indoors into the fold yard for the Winter. The reason for this is because the grass in the paddock and back field had all been eaten and the weather was beginning to turn colder and wetter. Bringing the cattle into the fold yard for the Winter means that they will keep warm and dry, sheltered from the weather. The cattle need more looking after when they are housed indoors as they have to be bedded up with straw once daily and fed silage and barley twice a day.

  1. Glad I only have a few goats on a couple of acres to look after.
Can only imagine the work involved in all that you have on your large farm.

  2. Hi Diane, Great to hear from you. There is always something to do on the farm just like anywhere. I am now learning to feed the cattle so that I can relieve the men of some of their duties and this won’t be a chore for me as I love the livestock. Are goats difficult to keep?

  3. I always love to see cows in the fields, I always have to stop and talk to them over the fence, and as for the calves I go all ‘ga ga’ over them. What I always question though is why I eat beef? Your cows look so well looked after, what breed our they?

  4. Hi Louise,
Yes cows look great in the field, so free. Yet the friesians that are still in the neighbouring field come up closeto our farmyard to be close to our cattle in the foldyard even though they have a whole field to frolic in! Thanks for the compliment about our cattle. The white cows are charolais and the black are saler cross.
