Feeding Pigs Apples

Windfallen Apples

  • Pigs love eating apples. (Well mine do, especially Cagney!)
  • The apples do not need to be peeled or chopped up.
  • The whole apple can be fed to the pig.
  • Hiding apples under the straw gives the pigs something to root out.
  • Pigs also enjoy finding apples in their drinking trough.

  1. Pigs dunking for apples, Who’d of thunk it. I enjoyed this post as I myself raised a pig before. They are characters.

  4. Hi Claire,
Someone told me that the pork tastes better if the animals have been fed apples in their diet. Thanks for the link. I have popped across a few times to check out their site. I particularly like their video clips of their chicks & pigs.
    Thanks for visiting and commenting.

  5. I love seeing the utter relish pigs eat apples with! Eyes half closed, chomping away with loud open-mouth sounds, tails wiggling. The boys used to copy them at mealtimes, and when I objected, there were great cries of ‘but mum, you love it when the pigs do it!’ Paula

  6. Hi Paula,
Yes Cagney and Lacy love the apples, particularly Cagney. They race about to find the apples and they do lift their heads and chomp very loudly. Children are so quick hen it comes to trying to get away with things. I thought your story was great.

  7. I love the idea of the pigs finding apples in their drinking trough.

They must be getting big now. Years ago, the basket weavers who lived in this cottage kept pigs. I think they were kept in a sty all the time. If we had a bit more space I’d love to keep pigs.

  8. Hi Cottage Smallholder,
I got this idea from the river cottage forum - it’s a great idea. The gilts are getting bigger and they look very healthy. Every morning and evening they squeal and grunt as I approach, which I am told is a good sign. They also swich their tail about whilst eating which must mean they are enjoying their food. How interesting to hear that your cottage once had pigs. I have been lucky with my pigs they are so good natured.
Thanks for you regular visits and comments.
