Natural Habitat For Japanese Quail

It is important when japanese quail are kept in huts, barns or aviaries to try to re-create their natural habitat.

Junior asked, “what would a japanese quails natural habitat look like?”
thankyou
Junior.

Hi Junior,

Quail are shy game birds that ground nest and therefore in the wild seek out natural cover. Their natural habitat includes grassland and agricultural land, although they don’t like the crops to be too tall.

If you are trying to create a natural environment in a run or aviary then some conifer branches placed in a corner or pots with small conifers in would work well. Also bracken cuttings and small branches and logs can be used to help create the natural environment.

I hope this information is useful to you.

Kind regards

If any readers have created successful cover in a run or aviary for quail then I would like to hear from you.

  1. I’ve picked some seeded plants and plants with caterpillars on but I have some non laying chickens because they are too young to lay and they ruin the nests should I put the quail in a rabbit hutch or run?

  2. Hi Junior,
I think that I would separate your quail from the chickens. I have also read that you should separate the female sitting quail from the male quail as the male can kill the chicks. When separating birds that are usually kept together I would try to keep the separated hut/run near the usually housing so that the birds can still see each other so that they can be re-introduced to the group once the chicks have hatched and are old enough to be grouped with the others.
    Hope this information helps.
Thanks for all the interesting comments you keep leaving. It is great to hear from other quail enthusiasts.
    Kind regards
