Owl Pellets

An Owl Pellet

An owl pellet is the regurgitated food items that an owl is unable to digest. The pellet is made up of bones, teeth, claws, fur and feathers of the birds, insects and small mammals that the owl has eaten.

If you find an owl pellet - you can carefully dissect the pellet to find out what the owl has eaten.

The size of the owl pellet can determine the age of the owl. The smaller pellets are usually from younger owls.

These pellets were all found on my farm and probably come from barn owls. At night I have seen barn owls roosting on the hay barn, but I have also seen a little owl down the lane and heard the call of the tawny owl at night.

  1. There are owls living in the woods in the next door garden. I must look out for these.

  2. Hi Fiona, Thanks for your comment.
Look out for branches marked with long white smears of bird muck and then hunt around the ground below the smears and you may get lucky! I usually find mine near the base of the corner posts of the barn where the owls perch.

  4. Hi Abbie,
I found mine around the base of a corner post on a barn. You are likely to find them near the base of a tree or post or near the corner of a building that the owl perches on. This is an excellent question and I hope you find one soon.
    Thanks for visiting and commenting.
