Pig Behaviour

I have had my Saddleback gilts for 2 weeks now and I have noticed that they exhibit a number of habitual traits.

Pigs

  • Pigs love to root about in the straw or the ground for food.
  • Pigs enjoy rubbing their bodies against a hard surface.
  • Pigs like to be scratched and rubbed particularly behind their ears, backs, sides and rump.
  • Pigs will try to muck in the same place.
  • Pigs like to sleep in the same place everyday.

As I get to know my pigs and spend more time observing them I may notice more piggy traits and behaviours. Let me know of any pig behaviour that you have observed.

  1. Hi Sara

We have found that pigs are the cleanest animals to look after. They always keep their beds clean, unlike cattle!

  2. Hi Mike,
Yes I agree the pigs are clean although their muck is really smelly! It’s great that the muck is all in one place.
The girls do like to rub against the wall and sometimes knock the metal water trough over, which I can only move with two hands and much brute force!!!

  4. Hi Diane,
No I am still trying to decide on the best name - here are the suggestions http://www.farmingfriends.com/names-for-the-saddleback-gilts/
I really like your suggestion of TV names and I love Cagney & Lacey.
I am a teacher and I have just broken up for the Summer so as I spend more time with my pigs I hope that the names will be easier to pick!
