Sowing Seeds - Green Thumb Sunday

I have been busy trying to keep on top of sowing seeds at the correct time of year.

Currently I have the following seeds germinating in the greenhouse:

  • Sweetpeas.
  • Broad beans.
  • Summer radish.
  • Marigolds.
  • Spinach.
  • Spinach beet.
  • Lilium regale.
  • Purple sprouting broccoli.

In the next few days I will be sowing the following seeds:

  • Rudbeckia.
  • Mesembryanthemums.
  • Cosmos.
  • Parsnips.
  • Dwarf French Beans.
  • Italian Flat Leaf Parsley.
  • Borage.

I will post some photos later.

  1. I’m waiting for some calmer weather (my greenhouse panels have a habit of flying off in high winds) before I start…and I am horribly behind at the moment, but I do have a few things to sow this year.

    Aquilegias and sunflowers, I’ll be doing the seashell cosmos again this year, trying my seeds that I collected from my sweet pea heirloom variety plants last year, echinacea, scabious, french marigolds as ‘companion’ planting for the tomatoes, pot marigolds, and definitely going to have a better go at some Morning Glory again this year.

    I find that if you leave the cosmos until they’re fairly robust and strong with thick stems in pots, and then transplant them, they do a heck of a lot better than straight into the ground.

  2. Hi Sara. I must say you amaze me with all the things that you do on your farm.
    Do you have farm workers that work with you or are you busy from dawn till dusk doing all what you do your self?

  3. Most unlike me, but I have not sown any yet this year. I may not do too many, so I rely on seeing all of your lovely fruits of your labour. I have so much to get done in the garden this year, that I must devote the time to my plans, and I am on the look out for another job too! x

  4. I really feel I must be getting on with the planting, but keep checking back in my ‘Garden Book’ from last year and for me its still abit early!!
    Oh hurry up warmer weather!!!!

  5. i’m still ‘gearing up’ to plant seeds, there are onions, carrotts and lettuce sprouting in the greenhouse but i really need to get in and start everything soon, its still a bit cold here and its probably best to wait.

  6. Just stuck some rhubarb seeds in a tray. Lucky to get hold of them, no chance here for rhizomes. Same for plain parsnips. It’s going to be a long wait.

  7. Mmmm Cosmos! The birds love them so I will have to plant some again this year. So far, I’ve planted a couple of tomatoes, zinnias, Siam Queen basil, Chinese eggplant (aubergine). And my orange cherry tomatoes from last year (!) produced a crop! I’ll post pics of them soon.

  8. Hi Sara, I see you have started lots of seeds. I don’t have a greenhouse and space is limited inside the house. I did start a piece of ginger. But I probably won’t be starting many seeds this year as we are planning a trip across the country for a few weeks so there will be no one here to tend my pots while I’m gone.
